Jem & The Holograms!

If you are a Jem and the Holograms fan like myself, then I have some interesting news for you. The cult classic toyline and TV show is on track to getting the big-screen treatment .

Jason Blum ‘s Blumhouse Productions , Scooter Braun Productions and director Jon M. Chu are teaming up to make the movie, which will start production this spring.

The trio took to Youtube to announce the joint venture, which will be a modern-day live-action reinvention of the cartoon, asking fans of the show and toyline for help in writing music, designing costumes and even casting.

According to the producers, Jem is being reimagined “for a whole new generation with themes of being true to who you are in a multitasking, hyperlinked social media age.”

The show revolved around Jem, the mysterious lead singer and front-woman of the rock group Jem and the Holograms, who is actually a young woman named Jerrica Benton, who adopts the persona with the help of a holographic computer, known as Synergy, which was built by Jerrica’s father to be “the ultimate audio-visual entertainment synthesizer” and was given to her after his passing.

The script was written by Ryan Landels , which will center on an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation. She and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt — one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.

As a Jem fan, an update gives me mixed feelings overall. I’ve been hoping that they would do a more modern version of the show, but re-imagined in cartoon form.

As a movie, I would have loved to see it animated instead of live action. Do I need to remind you of the Josie and the Pussycats live action film from the early 2000s?

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the three men behind the project, Jason Blum is a producer is is behind the Paranormal Activity series, Insidious and The Purge — just to name a few.

Scooter Braun, a talent manager, serves as the person responsible for introducing the world to Justin Bieber , as well as Ariana Grande , The Wanted and Psy .

Jon M. Chu is an American film director and screenwriter, who as a director is responsible for Step Up 2 and 3 , and G.I. Joe: Retaliation .

To get a glimpse of who Jem and the Holograms are, take a look at the theme song, which I believe gives a perfect preview of what the show is about:
