Martial arts epic The Grandmaster dominated the 2014 Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Awards on Wednesday, winning best film, best director for Wong Kar-wai , best actor for Tony Leung Chiu-wai , and best actress for Ziyi Zhang .

Based on the life story of the Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man , the drama film premiered January 8, 2013 in China and August 23, 2013 in the U.S.

It went on to become Kar-wai’s highest grossing film to date, earning $64,076,736 total worldwide.

The Way We Dance ‘s Babyjohn Choi won best newcomer award for his portrayal of a tai chi master and Adam Wong won best new director.

The Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild special award was given to Derek Kwok , director of As the Light Goes Out .
