Watch: Jesse Owens Smashes Hitler’s Myth of Aryan Superiority in ‘Race’ Trailer
The sports-drama will depict the tremendous adversity that Owens’ faced before his four gold medal wins at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, which “single-handedly crushed Adolf Hitler‘s myth of Aryan supremacy.”
Race also stars Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses 2) as Owens’ coach and mentor Larry Snyder; William Hurt (Captain America: Civil War) as Amateur Athletic Union president Jeremiah Mahoney, who led the boycott against the 1936 Olympics; Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) as U.S. Olympic Committee president Avery Brundage, who fought against the boycott; and Carice van Houten (Game of Thrones) as the infamous German director Leni Riefenstahl, who helmed 1935’s Triumph of the Will, a Nazi propaganda documentary.
Directed by Stephen Hopkins and written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, the feature will premiere in the U.S. on February 19, 2016 via Focus Features, Germany on May 5, 2016 via SquareOne Entertainment, and the Netherlands on June 30, 2016.
