A native New Yorker and former EMT, Laz takes an interest in Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), who will have multiple love interests this season.
Best known for his role on the long-running CSI: Miami, Rodriguez will next be seen in Magic Mike XXL, out July 1, 2015.
The second season of the series will consist of 18 episodes (6 more than season 1) that will be divided into two parts.
The first half of the season will premiere on September 23 at 9pm on FOX, with the second half airing in sometime in Spring 2016.
Also starring Terrence Howard, Empire centers on Lucious Lyon (Terrance), a drug dealer turned music mogul.
Within a month of its debut on January 7, 2015, the dramedy broke a 23-year ratings record as the only primetime scripted series to grow in total viewers over each of its first five telecasts since at least 1991 in the U.S.
