Watch: HBO Reveals Trailer for Intimate Kurt Cobain Doc, ‘Montage of Heck’

HBO has unveiled an official first trailer for Brett Morgen ‘s Cobain: Montage of Heck , a documentary on late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain . Watch above.

Set to premiere on May 4, 2015, the film blends Cobain’s personal and family archives, interviews with family and friends, various Nirvana performances and unheard songs, as well as unreleased home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, and songbooks.

Described as a “visceral and detailed cinematic insight of an artist at odds with his surroundings,” Montage of Heck follows Kurt from his childhood in Aberdeen, Washington, through the height of his fame and downfall.

Co-produced by HBO Documentary Films and Universal Pictures , the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2015 and the 65th Berlin International Film Festival on February 8, 2015.

Director Brett Morgen served as a producer for the feature along with Danielle Renfrew Behrens . Animated scenes were created by Stefan Nadelman and Hisko Hulsing .

Montage of Heck will be receive a limited theatrical release in the U.S. some time before the television premiere, with a UK theater release set for April 10, 2015.

The film’s soundtrack will feature an unreleased 12-minute acoustic song by Cobain.
