Black Thought and Questlove of the legendary hip-hop band The Roots recently sat down with Sway Calloway on Hip Hop Nation to discuss sustaining through their 25 year journey and their new album, And Then You Shoot Your Cousin…

Released on Tuesday, May 19, 2014 via Def Jam, the thematic eleventh studio LP takes a satirical approach to addressing the dangerous stereotypes and ideals within impoverished communities and hip-hop as well.

During the interview, Black Thought speaks on what inspired the album’s title:

“The inspiration behind the actual title was a line from KRS-One back in the day about emcees being more worried about their financial backin’ / steady packin’ the gat as if something is gonna happen / but then it doesn’t / you wind up shooting your cousin / you’re buggin’. So it’s about the irony in that. After all we been through, so many movements, so many generations have come and gone. So many people have kind of fought and died for the freedoms you have and for you to make the choices that you do, and that we do.”

Lasting just over 33 minutes, the set features Jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams, experimental composer Michel Chion, Mercedes Martinez of Jazzyfatnastees. frequent Roots collaborator Dice Raw, and singer-songwriter Raheem DeVaughn.
