Watch: Lupita Nyong’o Converses With Her Beauty Icon Alek Wek
For colored girls who are “dark as night” there are very few places where they see their beauty celebrated.
Enter Lupita Nyong’o, the 31-year-old Mexican-born Kenyan actress who has become a media darling from her breakout role in Steve McQueen‘s 12 Years A Slave.
What started as a little red carpet style adoration from fashionistas has turned into clamoring to discuss her skin, poise, and even possible future roles.
She represents a beauty that is unappreciated from Nairobi to Los Angles, but PEOPLE Magazine‘s newest “Most Beautiful” person and Lancôme‘s beauty ambassador once needed reassurance. She found it in Sudanese-British supermodel Alek Wek.
The 37-year-old, who burst onto the fashion scene at the age of 18 in 1995, played a significant role in repairing young Lupita’s bruised self-esteem.
“Everyone was talking about beautiful she was,” Lupita said during a moving speech at Essence Magazine‘s 2014 Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon. “Even Oprah said she was beautiful, and that made it a fact.”
The Oscar winner recently got a chance to meet her role model, and the two discussed beauty and inspiring others. Check out the video of their emotional conversation below.
