Instead of giving fans the expected seductive first collaboration, Shakira and Rihanna ‘s new single Can’t Remember To Forget You combines rock, reggae and heartbreak.

Premiering January 13, 2014, the uptempo new wave track finds the duo having selective memories when it comes to lovers they know they should cut loose but just can’t.

“I should you let you go / But when you look at me / The only memory is us kissing in the moonlight,” Shakira laments. Rihanna follows as the bouncy ska beat returns singing, “I go back again / Fall of the train / Land back in his bead / Repeat yesterday’s mistakes.”

Shakira described the song’s lyrics during an interview with On Air with Ryan Seacrest:

“I’m going through a completely different experience right in relation to the song. The song is about that guy that just gets under your skin and you can’t leave alone. I think every woman has been through that. This song is not exactly a reflection of my personal life right now.”

“[W]orking with [Rihanna] was utopia. She’s the sexiest woman on the planet. And at the end of the day, we’re both just basically Caribbean girls. The chemistry was so good and so real. She taught me dance moves. She was a sweet teacher.”

A music video for “Can’t Remember to Forget You” was shot in Los Angeles by director Joseph Kahn and should be out soon.
