On Sunday immediately following the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, Macklemore sent a text to his good friend Kendrick Lamar expressing his sadness for taking an award that he felt Kendrick deserved.

The message was shared on Macklemore’s official Instagram page and has caused quite a stir all over the interwebs, with some applauding the rapper while others called it a whack move.

Well in a short interview with XXL magazine , Kendrick spoke about his feelings towards Macklemore’s winnings, and about other rap greats who have yet to earn a Grammy. Take a look at what he had to say below:

On Macklemore’s wins:

“It’s well deserved; he did what he did, man. He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason; the universe comes back around, that’s how it go.”

On other rap artists like Nas and Snoop Dogg who have also lost:

“I definitely feel like they should always have more of the culture up in there, for sure, because we definitely stand out just like any other genre. We part of the world. We part of the movement. So I think any awards, including the Grammys, should always push for more hip-hop because it’s music as a whole, it’s not just splitting different regions. Everything moves as far as sound and vibrations, and that’s how it goes. And we are a part of that.”
