American Idol Returns with New Low but Great Feedback
Hit show American Idol officially made its return Wednesday night with hopes that the new judges panel would reverse several years of steep ratings losses, but that wasn’t completely true.
Though the Season 13 premiere episode averaged a 4.7 rating among adults 18-49 and 15.2 million viewers (quite good), it is a 22% drop from last season’s opener in the key demo of a 6.0 rating among adults 18-49 and 17.9 million viewers.
The new season sees judge Jennifer Lopez returning and Harry Connick Jr. joining the panel after last year’s reboot with Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey failed to improve viewership.
It was however up 28% from last year’s finale (3.6 adults). And the series gave Fox the highest-rated non-sports night of the season — excluding sports and the Golden Globes.
The show’s audition process however was notably friendlier among the judges, a departure from last season’s tense drama-filled panel and received great feedback from fans on Twitter as well as well known media outlets such as the L.A. times.
