A good place to start may be with his autobiography, Long Walk To Freedom – the inspiration for the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom , which has hit a few select U.S. theaters – with a wider release set for Christmas Day.

Starring Idris Elba as Mandela, the film explores his fight to end the system of apartheid in South Africa in the 1950s/60s and his 27-year incarceration before becoming President.

Mandela passed away Thursday at age 95 after months of concern for his health. News of his death broke during Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom ‘s London premiere.

The film has set a box-office debut record in South Africa, where it earned $427,000 in its opening week.
