Alicia Keys previewed “ Better You, Better Me ,” an empowering new R&B ballad at the Global Citizen Festival late last month and I’ve had it stuck in my head ever since. Now I can finally play it on repeat!

Co-written by Marsha Ambrosius, Steve Mostyn , and Ron Haney , the song is featured on the soundtrack for The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete , a riveting coming of age drama film about two inner city kids, who are left to fend for themselves over the summer after their mothers are arrested.

Starring Anthony Mackie, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks , and Jeffrey Wright , the movie opened in select theaters this month to rave reviews .

“At times I lost my mind / Had to look deep inside / And find a way to get over / Had to swallow my pride / I searched the world for the answers / But I’ve been searching too far / Because I’ve been here all along,” Alicia laments in the somber first verse before heading into an inspirational chorus.
