Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) Undergoes Force Feeding Procedure Used at Guantánamo Bay

It’s just standard procedure at Guantánamo Bay where over 40 detainees are being force fed in response to hunger-strikes during the month-long fast of Ramadan.

The U.S. detainment and interrogation camp has a well-documented history of torture, and rapper/actor Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) decided to experience some of it for a short film by UK human rights organization Reprieve.

Directed by Bafta award-winning director Asif Kapadia, the clip finds the artist unable endure the gruesome procedure, which is done twice a day and typically takes two ours to complete.

He’s shackled, strapped to a chair, and held down while a feeding tube is forced into his nose for the demonstration.

Before they can insert a second tube, he hysterically breaks down in tears and calls it off. His reaction is unforgettable.

“When the tube went in, the first part of it is not that bad but then you get his burning… I got this burning… And it just starts to be like really unbearable and it feels like something was going into my brain and it started to reach the back of my throat and I really just couldn’t take it.”

The video has become viral and it’s nearing a million views on Youtube. Watch below at your own discretion.

This isn’t the first social issue that Yasiin has attached himself to, recently taking on New York City’s controversial stop-and-frisk policy.
