“He was public enemy #1. Hunted by the police. Feared by the government. Revolutionary. Outlaw. Rebel. Fighter. Radical. Liberator,” reads the first official trailer for the highly-anticipated Nelson Mandela biopic, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

Based on Mandela’s 1994 autobiography, the Justin Chadwick-directed film, which stars Idris Elba, depicts the world leader’s journey from resilient anti-apartheid revolutionary to prisoner to South African president.

“Freedom, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

The trailer for the film gives us just a glimpse of the passion between Mandela and his second wife, social worker Winnie Madikizela (Naomie Harris), the profound violence and tension in South Africa, his unjust imprisonment for 27 years, and his election years later.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which will makes its world premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, hits theaters November 29. Enjoy the trailer below.
