Janelle Monáe ‘s highly-anticipated “ Q.U.E.E.N. “ video is every bit of retro-futuristic funk awesomeness that you would expect and more.
The 5-foot rebel soul diva and her time-traveling crew are set free by the Erykah Badu -assisted single — excuse me, Badoula Oblongata .
“Is it peculiar that she twerk in the mirror? And am I weird to dance alone late at night?”
Between the gorgeous background singers and their vintage do’s, Janelle busting out moves we’ve never seen before, and Badu’s fabulous lioness mane, you almost forget Monáe is dropping a sermon in the chic Alan Ferguson -directed clip:
“Are we a lost generation of our people?
Add us to equations but they’ll never make us equal
She who writes the movie owns the script and the sequel
So why ain’t the stealing of my rights made illegal?”
The song serves as the lead single from Janelle’s forthcoming third studio album, The Electric Lady , the follow-up to 2010′s The ArchAndorid , set to release this fall.
“Will you be electric sheep?
Electric ladies, will you sleep?
Or will you preach?”
