It’s been several months since rising singer-songwriter Jhené Aiko revealed the teaser video for “ 3:16 AM ,” but it was well worth the wait.
In this rather disturbing Topshelf Junior -directed clip, Jhené — whose lyrical honesty and vulnerability is nothing new — explores even deeper, darker feelings than we’ve heard or seen from the artist before.
“Broken promise of… everything that I thought you were. Thought you said this would never hurt… that’s what it did, that is all…”
Sure we’ve seen Jhené wander aimlessly in “ Stranger “ and display heartbreak and sadness in “ My Mine ,” but “3:16 AM” goes beyond sorrow as she seems to run out of options that numb the pain. As we’re sped through moments of complete anxiety and panic, the video’s morbid ending is almost unexpected.
“I don’t get it, you’re the only thing that I love, you’re the only thing that I want… you’re the only reason, the only reason!”
We expect this gloomy Fisticuffs -produced track to appear on the Def Jam newbie’s highly-anticipated official debut release, soul(ed) out . The album is preceeded by Jhené ‘s epic mixtape, .sailing soul(s). , which has kept fans longing for more. Both the album and “3:16 AM” follow Jhené ‘s recent collaborations with hip-hop newcomers Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul .
